Biogas is a renewable energy source produced from the anaerobic decomposition of organic matter, primarily containing methane and carbon dioxide. This process, also known as anaerobic digestion, uses bacteria to break down organic waste like manure, food waste, and agricultural residue into a combustible gas.

a) Production:
Biogas is generated in a sealed container called a biogas digester, where organic matter is broken down by anaerobic bacteria in the absence of oxygen.
b) Composition:
The primary components of biogas are methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), along with smaller amounts of other gases like hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen, & water vapor.
Applications are as under:
1) Cooking and Heating: Biogas can be used directly as a fuel for stoves, water heaters, and other heating appliances.
2) Electricity Generation: Biogas can power generators to produce electricity.
3) Vehicle Fuel: Biogas can be purified and upgraded to biomethane, which is a cleaner fuel for transportation.
