Green India mission for environmental control

Green India mission
Green India Mission (GIM), or National Mission for a Green India,-
   1) It is one of eight missions under the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) in India.
2)  Its primary goal is to increase forest and tree cover, improve the quality of existing forests, and enhance ecosystem services like biodiversity, water, and biomass.
3) Its aims to increase forest and tree cover on 5 million hectares and improve the quality of existing forests on an additional 5 million hectares in 10 years.
Key objectives and activities of the Green India Mission:-
1) Afforestation and reforestation:-
Planting trees on degraded lands and restoring existing forest areas.
2) Eco-restoration:-
.   Undertaking activities to restore degraded ecosystems, including those on private and public lands, with a key role for local communities.
3) Enhancing ecosystem services:-
Focusing on biodiversity, water, biomass, and other ecosystem services.
4) Climate change adaptation and mitigation:-
Addressing climate change impacts through adaptation and mitigation measures.
5) Promoting sustainable forest management: -
Encouraging sustainable practices in forestry and other related activities.
6) Capacity building:-
Training and empowering local communities involved in GIM activities.
7) Monitoring and evaluation:-
Regularly assessing the progress and effectiveness of GIM activities. States and Union Territories involved:
Seventeen states and one union territory have been taken up under the GIM based on their submitted perspective plans and available funds. These include:-
Andhra Pradesh,
Arunachal Pradesh,
Chhattisgarh,
 Haryana,
Himachal Pradesh,
 Karnataka,
 Kerala,
 Madhya Pradesh,
Maharashtra,
Manipur,
Mizoram,
 Odisha,
 Punjab,
Sikkim,
Uttarakhand,
Uttar Pradesh,
West Bengal, and
Jammu & Kashmir.
Implementation and Funding:-
The GIM is a centrally sponsored scheme with 100% central assistance, meaning the central government provides the full funding for the mission.
The funds are released to the states based on their perspective plans and annual plans of operation.
The states are evaluated on their plans and allocated funds accordingly.
Impact and benefits:-
The GIM is expected to have a positive impact on various aspects, including:
Increasing forest cover:
Contributing to the overall forest cover and biomass in the country.
Enhancing carbon sinks: -
Increasing the capacity of forests and other ecosystems to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Improving biodiversity: -
Restoring and protecting biodiversity in forest and non-forest areas.
Strengthening ecosystem services: -
Enhancing the provision of essential ecosystem services, such as water and biomass.
Supporting livelihoods:-
Providing employment and income-generating opportunities for local communities involved in GIM activities.
Resilience to climate change: -
Increasing the resilience of ecosystems and communities to the impacts of climate change.
The Green India Mission is a significant step towards addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development in India.
