Journey from Coal to renewal energy
India, a significant consumer of coal power, is witnessing substantial growth in clean energy adoption. While coal still dominates, India's clean energy sector is experiencing rapid expansion, with significant investments and project development.
Government sources indicate that India has the fourth-highest amount of installed clean power globally, with a recent surge of 30 gigawatts added in the fiscal year.
Coal's Dominance:-
While India's energy mix is heavily reliant on coal, the share of coal-based power generation is decreasing. The Economic Times notes that coal's share in installed capacity has dropped from 60% to less than 50%.
Clean Energy Growth:-
India is making substantial investments in renewable energy sources, including solar, wind, and hydro power. Government reports highlight the largest-ever addition of clean power in a single fiscal year, adding 30 GW, enough to power nearly 18 million homes.
Renewables Expansion:-
Multiple large-scale renewable energy projects are underway, including wind and solar power farms. News reports indicate that India's domestic manufacturing capacity for solar panels is also increasing.
Challenges Persist:-
Despite the rapid growth in installed capacity, the actual share of renewable energy in electricity generation remains lower than desired.
While non-fossil fuel sources now make up 45% of installed capacity, their share in electricity generation was only 24% last year
