Global renewable electricity generation has surpassed coal, producing 5,072 TWh compared to coal's 4,896 TWh in the first half of 2025. Solar energy drove this historic shift, accounting for 83% of the growth in new demand, while wind also contributed significantly. This milestone marks a turning point in the energy transition, as renewables now meet a growing portion of global electricity demand.

Renewables outpace coal:-
Renewables generated more electricity than coal globally for the first time, with renewables making up 34% of the total electricity and coal falling to 33%.
Solar and wind growth:-
Solar's expansion grew by 31% year-on-year, adding 306 TWh, while wind power added 97 TWh globally.
Meeting demand: -
The growth in solar and wind was strong enough to meet all the increase in global electricity demand, which rose by 2.6% in the first half of 2025.
Uneven progress: -
While China led the renewable surge, and India saw significant growth, some regions like the U.S. and Europe saw increases in fossil fuel generation due to factors like weather and policy.
