India's solar power share reached 9.2% of total electricity generation, up from 7.4% in the first half of 2024, while wind power's share increased to 5.1% from 4%.This significant growth in clean energy outpaced electricity demand, leading to a drop in fossil fuel consumption and a 24 million tonne reduction in power sector carbon dioxide emissions compared to the same period last year, according to a report from Ember.

Key Highlights
Solar Growth: -
Solar's contribution to India's electricity generation rose to 9.2% in the first half of 2025, a 1.8 percentage point increase from the previous year.
Wind Power Surge: -
Wind power grew by 11 TWh, or 29%, during the same period, increasing its share in electricity generation to 5.1% from 4%.
Emissions Reduction: -
The surge in clean energy was so  of CO2.substantial that it helped reduce India's power sector emissions by 24 million tonnes
Slowed Demand Growth:-
Clean energy's growth was more than three times higher than electricity demand growth, which was the slowest since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Shift from Fossil Fuels: -
As a result of this clean energy growth, power from coal plants decreased by 3.1% and gas-based generation dropped by 34%.

State-wise carbon emissions in India show a concentration in western and southern states, with byd as major emitters, particularly from the manufacturing and energy sectors. The highest total CO2 emissions have been linked to states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, though the specific ranking can vary depending on the data year and the specific pollutants included.
