Australia's main power grid needs to triple capacity by 2050, with a fivefold increase in wind, solar, and storage, plus 6,000km of new transmission lines, to meet rising demand from electrification and data centres, while phasing out coal by 2049 at the latest, as part of a cheapest-cost transition to renewable energy.
Key Requirements & Projections for 2050:-
Total Capacity:-
Tripling the grid's overall capacity.
Renewables: -
A fivefold rise in large-scale wind and solar to around 120 GW, plus an 87 GW increase in rooftop solar.
Storage: -
A significant jump in storage (batteries, pumped hydro) to 55 GW.
Transmission: -
Approximately 6,000 km of new transmission lines to connect renewable zones.
Coal Retirement: -
All remaining coal power stations to retire by 2049, with many closing earlier.
Gas: -
Gas plants will provide backup for rare lulls in wind and sun.
Why This Is Needed:-
Electrification Increased demand from electric vehicles, industry, and data centers will nearly double electricity consumption.
Cost-Effectiveness: -
AEMO's Integrated System Plan (ISP) confirms this renewable-heavy path is the cheapest way to ensure reliable, secure power.
Investment:-
An estimated A$128 billion in capital investment for generation, storage, and transmission is needed by 2050.
Next Steps:-
Development of Renewable Energy Zones (REZ) to build projects efficiently, supported by state governments.
In essence, AEMO's plan details a massive build-out of wind, solar, and storage, backed by transmission, to replace coal and meet Australia's growing clean energy demand by mid-century.
Australia's Energy Shake-Up: -
Grid Costs Blow Out as Coal Stays Until 2049
Australia's transition away from coal has always been pitched as inevitable.
