Key Facts about the Gotthard Base Tunnel:-
Construction & Timeline:
The project took roughly 20 years to complete, involving 2,400 workers and the excavation of 28.2 million tonnes of rock.
Significance:-
It serves as the backbone of the new transalpine railway axis (AlpTransit), significantly reducing travel time between Zurich and Lugano.
Structure: -
It consists of two single-track tunnels, allowing for safe, high-speed travel (up to 250 km/h).
Impact: -
The tunnel facilitates heavy freight traffic and reduces energy consumption by allowing trains to traverse the Alps with minimal climbing.
The tunnel is part of an extensive, record-breaking underground network in Switzerland, where over 10% of road and rail networks are located below ground.
