India's first hydrogen train is set to begin field trials on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana on January 26, 2026, marking a major step in green rail transport with zero emissions, running on hydrogen produced at a new Jind plant and featuring advanced Indian technology for cleaner travel and reducing diesel dependency.
Key Details:
Launch/Trial Date: -
January 26, 2026.
Route: -
Jind to Sonipat in Haryana (approx. 90 km).
Technology: -
The train uses hydrogen fuel cells, combining hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, with water vapor as the only emission.
Development: -
Manufactured by Indian Railways' Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, showcasing "Atmanirbhar Bharat" (self-reliant India).
Features:-
A 10-coach train-set with 2,400 kW power.
A dedicated hydrogen plant in Jind, built with Spanish collaboration, for fueling.
Dual Power Driver Cars (DPCs) with 1200 HP motors.
Automatic doors, digital displays, AC, and lighting.
Significance: -
Aims to replace diesel trains, reduce carbon footprint, and position India as a leader in hydrogen train technology.
This pilot project is a precursor to Indian Railways' plan to deploy 35 hydrogen-powered trains on heritage and hilly routes.
