According to data presented to the Lok Sabha on March 23, 2026, by Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav, over 20.7 million tonnes of plastic packaging waste has been recycled since the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Guidelines were introduced in 2022. This initiative, supporting a circular economy, now includes 60,128 registered producers, importers, and brand owners, along with 3,012 registered plastic waste processors on the centralized portal.

EPR Enforcement:-
 The CPCB issued show-cause notices in late 2024 and March 2026 to entities failing to meet EPR targets and failing to submit annual returns for FY 2022-23 and 2023-24.
Waste Generation Data: -
Despite increased recycling efforts, India’s total plastic waste generation fluctuated, with ~4.13 million tonnes generated in 2022–23.
Targeted Actions:-
 The 2022 rules target not just plastic, but also encourage alternatives, with strict penalties for non-compliance, aimed at curbing low-utility single-use plastics.
