Biomethanol is poised to outpace hydrogen-based e-methanol production in the short term due to lower costs and faster scalability, according to Chinese brokerages. While e-methanol struggles with high electricity prices, biomass gasification offers a more immediate, cost-competitive path for the maritime industry, leading to 12 million tons of planned capacity.
Key points regarding the surge in:- Chinese green methanol production:
Dominance of Biomethanol:-
High electricity costs make green hydrogen-based e-methanol less financially viable than converting biomass into syngas for methanol in the near future.
Production Targets: -
Chinese producers have announced over 30 million tons of green methanol production annually, divided into roughly 12 million tons of biomethanol and 18 million tons of e-methanol capacity.
Key Players & Projects: -
Major developments include projects by Goldwind (250,000 tons/year) and CIMC Enric in Zhanjiang, which target the marine fuel market, aiming for full operation and high-volume output by 2025-2026.
Strategic Export: -
These projects are heavily geared towards exporting to global shipping lines to meet strict emission reduction targets, using both biomass and e-methanol blends.
While biomethanol leads short-term production, long-term strategies still involve integrating wind power with electrolysis, indicating a shift from purely bio-based to fully renewable e-methanol as technology advances.

Does this report indicate a significant slowing of investment in Chinese e-methanol projects?

State-wise carbon emissions in India show a concentration in western and southern states, with byd as major emitters, particularly from the manufacturing and energy sectors. The highest total CO2 emissions have been linked to states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, though the specific ranking can vary depending on the data year and the specific pollutants included.
