The 12 R’s of waste management extend the traditional 3R model to promote a circular economy, focusing on minimizing waste and maximizing resource efficiency.
Key steps include
Refuse, Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Refurbish, Remanufacture, Repurpose, Recycle, Recover, Resell, and Rot,
encouraging conscious consumption & sustainable resource management.
Refuse:-
Say no to unnecessary, single-use, or non-recyclable items.
Rethink: -
Reconsider consumption habits and redesign products for sustainability.
Reduce:-
Lower the amount of waste generated by buying less.
Reuse: -
Use items multiple times or find new purposes for them.
Repair: -
Fix broken items instead of replacing them.
Refurbish: -
Update or restore old products to make them functional again.
Re-manufacture: -
Use parts of old products to create new, high-quality items.
Re-purpose: -
Use a product for a different purpose than its original intent, says Circularise.
Recycle: -
Process materials into new products.
Recover:-
Generate energy or materials from waste that cannot be recycled.
Resell/Return: -
Return broken items to manufacturers or sell/donate items no longer needed.
Rot: -
Compost organic waste to return nutrients to the soil.
These actions promote a shift from a linear "take-make-waste" model to a circular one where resources remain in use for as long as possible.
R-Strategies for a Circular Economy - Circularise.Smarter product use and manufacturing. R0: Refuse, because consumers can do without it. R1: Rethink.
