The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has launched a comprehensive green hydrogen skilling initiative under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, aiming to train 600,000 workers by 2030. This program includes short-term training, upskilling, and establishing Centers of Excellence to build a skilled workforce for the growing green hydrogen ecosystem.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has launched a comprehensive green hydrogen skilling initiative under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, aiming to train 600,000 workers by 2030. This program includes short-term training, upskilling, and establishing Centers of Excellence to build a skilled workforce for the growing green hydrogen ecosystem.
Key Details of the Initiative:
Target: -
Skilling, upskilling, and reskilling 600,000 personnel by 2030 to support the National Green Hydrogen Mission's production goals.
Components:-
 The initiative includes short-term training, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), setting up Centers of Excellence (CoEs), and integrating hydrogen curriculum in educational institutions (ITIs, polytechnics).
Focus Areas: -
Training covers electrolysis, fuel cells, storage, and project management.
Funding: -
A total budget of ₹50 million has been allocated for up to five CoEs, with a maximum of ₹10 million ($106,631) funding per CoE covering up to 70% of project costs.
Implementation: -
The program is conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, with mandatory industry participation for on-the-job training. 
The initiative aims to address the skill gap and ensure a ready workforce as India moves towards producing 5 MMT of green hydrogen annually by 2030. 
The National Green Hydrogen Mission (Mission' henceforth) was launched in January 2023 with a budgetary outlay of Rs. 19,744 crore.

 What Skills Need to Be Developed? To address the skills gap, India must adopt a layered skilling framework that emphasizes both disciplinary depth 
   A coordinated skill development programme, that covers requirements in various segments, will be undertaken in coordination with the Ministry of Skill Development.
