Key Responsibilities to Save the Environment
Accelerate Climate Action: -
Leaders must immediately peak global emissions and transition to renewable energy to reach net-zero by 2050.
Biodiversity Protection:-
Commit to halting nature loss by 2030, reversing damage to ecosystems, and safeguarding oceans and forests.
Sustainable Financing:-
Shift financial flows away from harmful subsidies toward green initiatives, supporting developing nations in adaptation.
Strengthen Legal Frameworks: -
Enforce international laws that hold parties accountable for environmental destruction during wartime, as war causes long-term ecological damage.
Environmental Imperatives for Peace
Eliminate Environmental Warfare: -
Combatants must respect the natural environment, as modern warfare destroys vital infrastructure and poisons air and water.
Focus on Prevention:-
Utilize diplomatic, non-coercive measures to prevent conflicts (the R2P principle), which are precursors to massive environmental degradation.
Resource Management for Peace: -
Address scarcity of resources like water and land to prevent conflicts and ensure sustainabilty.
World leaders must urgently act at speed and scale, listening to scientific evidence and youth, to ensure a sustainable future, as highlighted by the UN Secretary-General's address and young people's voices .
