Millions of trees are being planted across Africa to combat desertification, restore degraded soil, and sequester carbon, driven by initiatives like the Great Green Wall, which aims to restore 100 million hectares by 2030. Key efforts, including TIST and Ethiopia's Green Legacy, involve local communities in planting tens of millions of trees to improve land, enhance food security, and create jobs.

Key efforts, including TIST and Ethiopia's Green Legacy, involve local communities in planting tens of millions of trees to improve land, enhance food security, and create jobs.
Key Reforestation Initiatives and Impact:
The Great Green Wall (GGW): -
Launched by the African Union in 2007, this initiative aims to create a 8,000km natural wonder across the Sahel, restoring 100 million hectares of land and sequestering 250 million tons of carbon.
TIST Program: -
Over 265,000 farmers in East Africa have planted more than 28.3 million trees to boost soil health and resilience against drought.
Ethiopia's Green Legacy: -
A massive, community-driven project aiming to plant billions of trees to combat deforestation and land degradation.
Trees for Homes (South Africa):-
Since 2000, this program has planted over one million trees in Johannesburg to enhance greening and sequester carbon.
Ecosia Partnerships: -
The search engine has funded over 15 million trees in Bur kina Faso, plus millions more in Senegal and Ethiopia.
Environmental and Social Benefits:
Carbon Removal: -
These projects play a crucial role in reducing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Soil Restoration: -
Trees improve soil quality, prevent erosion, and stop the encroachment of the Sahara Desert.
Community Resilience:
The initiatives create thousands of green jobs and improve agricultural conditions, contributing to food security.
Despite challenges like drought, political instability, and lower-than-anticipated survival rates in some areas, these reforestation projects represent a critical, long-term commitment to ecological restoration across Africa.

State-wise carbon emissions in India show a concentration in western and southern states, with byd as major emitters, particularly from the manufacturing and energy sectors. The highest total CO2 emissions have been linked to states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, though the specific ranking can vary depending on the data year and the specific pollutants included.
