Retired employees in India, particularly under the EPS- 95 scheme, are demanding a minimum pension hike from ₹1,000 to ₹7,500 per month, plus dearness allowance and free medical care. Major demands include restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) over the New Pension System (NPS) and urgent pension revisions for long-pending cases.
Key Pensioner Demands (2026):
EPS-95 Pension Hike:
The EPS-95 National Agitation Committee is protesting for a minimum monthly pension of ₹7,500 (up from ₹1,000) for around 81 lakh beneficiaries, citing rising costs of living.
Restoration of Old Pension Scheme (OPS): -
Strong demands are being made by central and state government employees to scrap the National Pension System (NPS) and restore the OPS for guaranteed, stable retirement income.
8th Pay Commission Proposals:-
Employee unions have presented 9 big demands to the 8th Pay Commission, focusing on enhanced pension benefits, better pay structure, and improved welfare measures to be effective from January 1, 2026.
Pension Revision for Public Sector Workers: -
Retired coal workers and other PSU staff are demanding immediate revision of pensions, which have remained stagnant for decades.
Medical Facilities:-
Pensioners are calling for free, comprehensive medical care for themselves and their spouses.
Context for Demands:
Inadequate Pension:
Many EPS-95 pensioners receive a minimum pension of only ₹1,000, which they argue is insufficient.
Rising Inflation:-
High inflation rates have reduced the purchasing power of the existing pension amounts.
Fund Deficit Concerns: -
The EPFO has indicated that fulfilling the high pension demands could result in a significant financial liability of over ₹1.86 lakh crore.
