The river suffers from severe contamination caused by untreated sewage and industrial waste, which regularly creates thick, toxic white foam. 
Key Environmental & Health Issues:
Extreme Pollution: -
The 22-km stretch from Wazirabad to Okhla accounts for nearly 76% of the river's total wastewater pollution.
Toxic Foam:-
 High levels of ammonia, industrial effluents, and detergents lead to thick foam on the water surface, especially near Kalindi Kunj and the Wazirabad Barrage.
Health Risks: -
The water quality makes it unsuitable for bathing or direct contact. Despite this, the Yamuna supplies roughly 70% of Delhi's drinking water.

Cleanup Efforts: -
The Delhi government has ongoing initiatives and funding allocations (including projects around the Najafgarh drain) aimed at installing new sewage treatment plants to stop untreated waste from entering the river.
Activism: -
The river’s dire condition continues to spark protests, with recent public demonstrations highlighting the ongoing crisis.
