Ethanol fuel is a clear, renewable, alcohol-based biofuel produced by fermenting the sugars and starches in crops like sugarcane, corn, and agricultural waste. It is widely used to oxygenate standard petrol and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, though it has a lower energy density than pure petroleum. It is widely used to oxygenate standard petrol and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, though it has a lower energy density than pure petroleum.
India is rapidly accelerating its ethanol infrastructure to reduce dependence on crude oil imports and lower emissions. The landscape of ethanol fuel is defined by several key factors:
Blending Programs
Cd
Nearly all standard petrol sold contains 10% (E-10) to 20% (E-20) ethanol, which can be run in most modern petrol vehicles without engine modification.
E-85 (Flex Fuel): -
This blend contains up to 85% ethanol. It is designed specifically for Flexible Fuel Vehicles (FFVs) and was recently introduced at select fuel stations in major Indian cities.
E100:-
Following official government recognition in India, vehicles are now legally approved to run on 100% (or nearly 100%) ethanol.
The Pros and Cons
Benefits:-
Burns cleaner than traditional fossil fuels, significantly reduces tailpipe emissions, and provides a sustainable economic boost to the agricultural sector.
Drawbacks: -
Contains lower energy density, which can result in slightly reduced fuel efficiency (lower mileage). It can also cause corrosion in older engines not built to handle alcohol blends.
Vehicle Compatibility
Standard petrol vehicles are typically only designed to handle blends up to E20. Using higher-concentration ethanol fuels (like E85 or E100) requires a specially manufactured Flex-Fuel Vehicle (FFV) to prevent engine damage.

State-wise carbon emissions in India show a concentration in western and southern states, with byd as major emitters, particularly from the manufacturing and energy sectors. The highest total CO2 emissions have been linked to states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, though the specific ranking can vary depending on the data year and the specific pollutants included.
