Europe has recently experienced a historic, record-breaking early-summer heatwave, with temperatures consistently soaring past 40°C , across Western, Central, and Northern Europe. The extreme conditions have prompted heat-stress warnings and halted public events, causing over 1,300 excess deaths.
Key Heatwave Statistics & Records
Germany: -
Recorded an all-time national high of 41.5°C (106.7°F) in eastern Germany.
France: -
Temperatures hit an extreme 43.8°C (110.8°F) in the western town of Pulluau, with overnight temperatures setting a new national record of 22°C.
Denmark: -
Logged its highest-ever temperature in late June, joining nations like Switzerland, the Netherlands, Spain, and the Czech Republic in posting triple-digit (Fahrenheit) readings.
Affected Regions and Impacts
Widespread Exposure:-
Up to 150 million people have been living under extreme heat.
Infrastructure Strain:-
Public transit services were severely disrupted, schools were shut down, and power grids buckled under the high energy demands.
Health Risks: -
Because European homes, workplaces, and public venues are traditionally built to insulate and retain heat (and lack widespread air conditioning), the soaring temperatures led to a dangerous spike in heat exhaustion and fatalitities.
