Why Trees are Essential for Human Survival
The existence of trees affects nearly every facet of our environment. Understanding the breakdown of these ecological functions highlights just how dependent we are on them:

1) Oxygen and Carbon Regulation
Trees are essential contributors to the air we breathe.
Oxygen Production:-
Through photosynthesis, trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. While ocean algae and phytoplankton produce roughly half of the Earth's oxygen, terrestrial trees are the primary producers that sustain complex land ecosystems.
Climate Mitigation: -
Trees act as massive carbon sinks. Without them, global greenhouse gases would skyrocket, causing catastrophic global warming and making the air difficult to breathe.
2) Water Cycle and Soil Health
Trees are the backbone of terrestrial hydrology.
Water Mediation: -
Trees draw water from the soil and release it into the atmosphere (transpiration), contributing heavily to cloud formation and rainfall. Without this cycle, formerly green areas would experience permanent, severe droughts.
Soil Retention: -
Root systems hold soil together. Without trees, heavy rains would cause massive soil erosion, washing fertile dirt away and preventing agricultural growth, which would ultimately lead to global famine.
3).Biodiversity and Ecosystems
Forests are the most biodiverse terrestrial habitats on Earth.
Habitat:-
Forests house over 70% of the world's land animals and plants. A world without trees would wipe out countless species, severely damaging the global food chain.
4)Human Health and Daily Life
Even disregarding the global environment, trees are deeply intertwined with human quality of life.
Air Filtering:-
Trees filter dangerous particulate matter, fine dust, and pollutants out of the air, significantly reducing the rate of respiratory diseases.
Resource and Livelihood:-
Beyond providing wood for construction and paper, trees supply food (fruits, nuts) and vital ingredients for modern and traditional medicines.

State-wise carbon emissions in India show a concentration in western and southern states, with byd as major emitters, particularly from the manufacturing and energy sectors. The highest total CO2 emissions have been linked to states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, though the specific ranking can vary depending on the data year and the specific pollutants included.
