The historic reform permits private and foreign companies to build, own, and operate nuclear plants—a domain previously restricted to state-owned entities like the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL).
Key Industry & Policy Developments
Policy Overhaul: -
The Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Bill replaces the restrictive atomic energy laws of the past, significantly revising operator liability and establishing a dedicated nuclear liability fund.
Investment Opportunities: -
Major domestic engineering, capital goods, chemicals, and power transmission companies are positioning themselves for engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contracts, equipment supply, and potential independent ownership.
Ambitious Targets: -
The government is aiming for a massive scale-up, targeting 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047 (up from just -8.2 GW) to reach net-zero goals and ensure round-the-clock clean energy.
Faster Execution: -
The government expects private partnerships to significantly cut down the lengthy 10-year average construction time currently associated with Indian nuclear projects.
Sectors Benefiting from the Shift
Capital Goods & Heavy Engineering: Manufacturing specialized components like reactor vessels, steam generators, and turbines.
Fuel Cycle & Mining: -
Private firms are gaining rights to import and process uranium, driving activity across the nuclear supply chain.
SMRs & Innovation: -
Interest is surging in advanced Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) which are highly scalable and offer quicker setup.
