Goa is advancing green hydrogen production by directly harnessing offshore ocean resources, a strategy spearheaded by the Goa-based CSIR–National Institute of Oceanography (NIO).
The region is pioneering several green hydrogen and ocean energy initiatives: -
Hybrid Offshore Platforms:-
The CSIR-NIO is developing India's first hybrid floating offshore platform off the coast of South Goa. This structure aims to generate power by integrating five renewable sources: solar, wind, wave, tidal, and ocean current energy.
Direct Hydrogen Production at Sea:-
To eliminate the need for expensive subsea transmission cables, the pilot project’s long-term goal is to use the offshore platform's electricity to desalinate seawater and split it into hydrogen directly on-site.
Year-Round Reliability:-
By combining forces, the ocean energy systems compensate for the lack of solar generation during the harsh monsoon season, as wind, wave, and ocean current energy become stronger.
Port Decarbonization Hub: -
GH2 Solar and the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) in Goa have partnered via a Memorandum of Understanding to develop a green hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol production hub at the port limits.
