A device that generates electricity from ocean waves is called a Wave Energy Converter (WEC).
How Wave Energy Converters Work
Capturing Motion: -
The device floats on the water or sits near the shore, moving up and down or back and forth with the rhythm of the waves.
Generating Power:-
That physical movement pushes water, compresses air, or moves pistons, which turns a turbine or drives a generator to produce clean electricity.
Sending Energy: -
The electricity travels through underwater cables directly to the power grid on land.
Common Types of Devices
Point Absorber Buoys: -
Floating buoys tethered to the seabed that bob with the waves to activate internal mechanical or pneumatic systems.
Oscillating Water Columns: -
Hollow chambers where incoming waves trap and push air past a turbine to spin a generator.
Local Innovations: -
In India, researchers at IIT Madras developed an ocean wave energy device named Sindhuja-I to harvest power from coastal waves.

State-wise carbon emissions in India show a concentration in western and southern states, with byd as major emitters, particularly from the manufacturing and energy sectors. The highest total CO2 emissions have been linked to states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, though the specific ranking can vary depending on the data year and the specific pollutants included.
