Toxic contamination includes lead levels up to 1,000 times higher than US drinking water standards and fecal bacteria 5,000 times above safe limits. 
Health hazards force 60% of nearby residents to suffer persistent skin infections, while local fish populations have dropped by 60%. 
Ongoing Clean-up Efforts
Government and military forces have paired up under integrated restoration frameworks like Citarum Harum to dredge waste and penalize illegal dumping. 
Grassroots groups like Sungai Watch install specialized physical trash barriers upstream to intercept plastic before it hits open water.
