India is rushing coal shipments to power plants as heavy monsoon rains in key mining states have reduced fuel inventories at nearly 60 thermal generators to critical levels, according to Firstpost. 
Current Situation
Critical Plants: -
Around 58 to 59 thermal power plants hold coal stocks below 25% of required inventory, or enough for fewer than three days of generation. 
Overall Reserves: -
The government and Coal India maintain that there is no overarching national shortage, with total pithead and transit reserves exceeding 120 million tonnes. 
Supply Action: -
Authorities ramped up daily railway rake deployments (reaching 444 trains) to speed up deliveries from states like Odisha, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh. 
Main Causes
Monsoon Disruptions: -
Heavy downpours flooded open-cast mines and slowed down coal transportation via rail and road.
High Power Demand: -
Cooling requirements remained high due to weather patterns, putting heavy reliance back on coal despite strong daytime solar generation.
