India is scaling up its clean energy goals through a major Nuclear Energy Mission that targets 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047. 
Key Goals and Targets
Capacity Expansion:-
 India operates 24 nuclear reactors with an installed capacity of 8.78 GW (as of July 2026), aiming to reach 22.38 GW by 2031–32 and 100 GW by 2047. 
Small Modular Reactors (SMRs): -
The Press Information Bureau notes an allocation of ₹20,000 crore to deploy indigenous SMRs, targeting at least five operational units by 2033. 
Policy and Legal Support: -
The SHANTI Act, 2025 modernizes India's legal framework to enable private sector participation and accelerate domestic manufacturing. 
Hydrogen Innovation:-
 India commissioned the world's first nuclear process heat-based hydrogen-generating pilot plant at Kalpakkam.
Fossil Fuel Sources (Total:-46.8%)
Coal: -
221.940 GW (41.7% of total capacity) remains the backbone of baseline power generation.
Gas: 20.122 GW (3.8%).
Lignite: 6.620 GW (1.2%).
Diesel: 0.589 MW (0.1%). 
Non-Fossil and Renewable Sources (Total: 53.2%)
Renewable Energy Sources (RES including large & small Hydro, Solar, Wind, and Bio): -
Over 50% of the total capacity mix, driven heavily by solar and wind additions.
Nuclear: -
Around 8.780 GW (~1.6%). 
Sector-Wise Breakdown
Private Sector: -
278.632 GW (52.3% share)
State Sector: 130.000 GW (24.4% share)
Central Sector: 124.108 GW (23.3% share)
