Gujarat features one of India's largest and most diversified energy sectors, currently maintaining a total installed electricity generation capacity of 58.2 GW.
Driven by intense festive, agricultural, and industrial loads, the state recorded an all-time high maximum peak load demand of 29.822 GW on October 16, 2026.
Gujarat’s generation mix has significantly shifted toward clean energy, with renewable sources now making up the majority of the total installed capacity.
Role of Renewable Energy (Solar & Wind)31.403 GW, 54.0% Dominant clean energy source, though generation drops drastically off-peak.
Thermal Generation 16.09 GW, 27.6% Critical baseload power to support heavy industrial operations.
Gas-based Generation 6.89 GW 11.8% Offers vital evening peaking support and quick grid balancing.
Hydro & Pumped Storage-
1.990 GW 3.4%Peaking and flexible capacity, though highly dependent on seasonal rain.
Nuclear Power-1.840 GW, 3.2% Constant baseline clean energy supply.
Total Capacity:-58.221 GW 100%Total available state grid infrastructure.
Maximum Load Demand & Grid Dynamics
The Record Peak: -
The historic GW peak load occurred during Navratri due to a unique combination of delayed monsoon rainfall deficits (triggering heavy agricultural irrigation demand of 12 GW) and a surge in industrial and festive consumption.
The Evening Challenge: -
While Gujarat's overall capacity is double its peak load, the grid faces temporary operational strain between 5:00 PM and 11:00 PM.
During these hours, solar output drops to zero and wind generation can be intermittent, forcing full reliance on thermal, gas, and supplemental grid allocations.
Future Projections: -
Fueled by a 10-12% electricity growth rate, planners anticipate Gujarat's maximum demand will push past 32.500 GW by 2027, with massive additional demand streams coming from AI computing and data centers expected by 2029.
