India's electricity consumption surged 11% year-on-year to 162 billion units (BU) in September 2026, driven by an unseasonably hot and humid climate alongside an ongoing El Niño pattern. As a result, coal stocks at domestic utilities limited 60% YoY to 19 million tonnes (MT), down from 47 MT in the same period last year.

Key Metrics & Power Dynamics
Peak Power Demand:-
Touched a historic record of 269 GW, jumping 17% compared to September last year.
Thermal Compensation:-
A steep 16% YoY decline in hydropower generation (falling to 19 BU) forced coal-fired thermal power plants to step in, increasing thermal output by 16% to 118 BU.
Critical Inventories:-
As of late September, over 80 out of 191 coal power plants faced critically low fuel stocks (holding less than 25% of their normal target inventory).
Financial Pressures: -
Fuel exhaustion coincided with rising international costs, with Indonesian coal prices up 47% YoY to $111 per MT and geopolitical strains pushing spot LNG to $26 per MMBtu.

Government Responses & Mitigation
The Ministry of Power triggered Section 11 of the Electricity Act, directing captive and imported coal-fired power plants (such as Tata Power’s Mundra plant) to maximize generation capacity to maintain grid stability. Additionally, daily rail rake deployments were increased to over 440 trains to accelerate shipments from pithead mines where millions of tons of coal reserves remain intact.
