Carbon capture from environment
Capturing carbon from the atmosphere involves technologies and natural processes that remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air and either store it or use it for other purposes:-
This process is crucial for mitigating climate change by reducing atmospheric greenhouse gases. Two main categories of carbon capture from the atmosphere are:
1) Direct Air Capture (DAC): -
This technology uses physical or chemical processes to extract CO2 directly from the atmosphere, at any location.
DAC systems use materials that selectively absorb CO2 from the air.
The captured CO2 can then be stored or used for various purposes, such as enhanced oil recovery or to produce fuels.
2) Biological and Geological Carbon Sequestration:-
These methods involve natural processes or artificial interventions to store carbon in the earth's geological formations or biological systems.
3) Biological sequestration:-
It Includes using trees, forests, and other plants to absorb CO2 through photosynthesis. Expanding and managing forests can increase carbon uptake.
4) Geological sequestration:-
Involves capturing CO2 from industrial processes or directly from the atmosphere and storing it in underground geological formations like depleted oil and gas reservoirs or deep saline aquifers.
5) Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR):-
CO2 can be injected into oil reservoirs to improve oil extraction and, importantly, often remain stored underground.
6) Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage :-
This involves using biomass (like wood or grasses) to produce energy, with the CO2 being captured and stored.
Biomass plants absorb CO2 from the atmosphere through photosynthesis.
The biomass is then burned in a power plant, and the resulting CO2 emissions are captured and stored.
7) Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS): -
This process involves capturing CO2 from industrial sources or power plants, transporting it, and then storing it underground.
CCS can also involve capturing CO2 directly or indirectly from the atmosphere.
8) Other methods:-
a) Ocean fertilization:-
Involves adding nutrients to the ocean to stimulate phytoplankton growth, which can absorb CO2.
b) Soil carbon sequestration:
Improving soil health and management practices can increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil.
