WIND and SOLAR POWER beat fossil fuels in the EU power mix in 2025, generating a record 30.1% of electricity compared to fossil fuels' 29%, a major turning point in the energy transition, following earlier milestones where renewables overtook gas in 2022 and solar surpassed coal in 2024. This shift is driven by rapid wind and solar growth, displacing coal and gas, reducing emissions, and decreasing reliance on imported fuels, with projections showing continued acceleration towards 2030.

Key Milestones & Data (Ember Think Tank Reports)

2022:-
Wind & solar (22%) first surpassed fossil gas (20%) for the full year.
2024: -
Solar (11%) overtook coal (10%), and wind (17%) generated more than gas (16%) for the second year, with renewables reaching 47% of power.
2025 (Full Year): -
Wind & solar (30.1%) generated more than all fossil fuels (29%) combined for the first time, according to Ember.
First Half of 2024: -
Wind & solar (30%) first beat fossil fuels (27%) in a half-year period, with coal down 24% and gas down 14%.

Why It Matters Energy Security: -
Reduces dependence on volatile imported fossil fuels, as highlighted during the European energy crisis, notes Windpower Monthly.
Climate Goals: -
Accelerates the European Green Deal's ambition to decarbonize the power sector, with renewables expected to hit 47% by 2024 and more needed by 2030.
Cost Reduction: -
Lower fossil fuel generation helps mitigate high energy costs.
The Trend:-
The growth of wind and solar, particularly solar, has been rapid, driven by policy and market conditions, pushing fossil fuels to historic lows and signifying a fundamental shift in the EU's energy landscape.

State-wise carbon emissions in India show a concentration in western and southern states, with byd as major emitters, particularly from the manufacturing and energy sectors. The highest total CO2 emissions have been linked to states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, though the specific ranking can vary depending on the data year and the specific pollutants included.
