China has officially put into operation the "Jupiter I," the world's first 30-megawatt (MW) class, 100% pure hydrogen gas turbine, marking a significant milestone in clean energy technology.
The turbine, developed by Mingyang Hydrogen Energy in Inner Mongolia, is designed to generate electricity using only hydrogen, effectively addressing the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources.
Key Performance Specs & Impact
Power Output: -
In combined-cycle mode, the turbine generates 48,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity per hour.
Household Capacity: -
This output is sufficient to meet the daily electricity demand of approximately 5,500 households.
Environmental Impact: -
The turbine reduces carbon emissions by over 200,000 tonnes annually compared to a conventional coal-fired thermal generator of the same size.
Efficiency:-
The unit achieves a 70% thermal efficiency in combined-cycle operation and a 35% "electricity-hydrogen-electricity" conversion efficiency.
Technological Breakthrough
Unlike turbines that blend hydrogen with natural gas, the Jupiter I is designed for 100% pure hydrogen, which posed significant engineering challenges overcome by Mingyang Group.
Combustion Technology: The team developed a specialized Micro-premixed Low-Emission (DLE) combustion chamber with 3D-printed nozzles to manage high flame speeds and prevent backfire.
Emission Control: -
Nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions are controlled below 50mg/Nm³, meeting stringent environmental standards.
Operational Role:-
The turbine acts as a critical component in "power-to-hydrogen-to-power" (P2H2P) systems, storing surplus solar or wind energy as hydrogen and converting it back to electricity during peak demand or low renewable generation.
This project, located in the Etuoke High-Tech Industrial Development Zone in Ordos City, acts as a national-level demonstration pilot for China's green energy transition.

State-wise carbon emissions in India show a concentration in western and southern states, with byd as major emitters, particularly from the manufacturing and energy sectors. The highest total CO2 emissions have been linked to states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, though the specific ranking can vary depending on the data year and the specific pollutants included.
