Summer 2026 Target: -
Nepal aims to nearly double its current supply to 1.1 GW to meet anticipated record electricity demand, according to the NEA.
Long-Term Goal: -
Within two years, Nepal aims to export ~2.5 GW, supported by improvements in grid infrastructure.
India's Context: -
India expects a peak demand of 270 GW this summer and is actively diversifying its energy sources to include more reliable, sustainable, and high-demand hydropower.
Drivers: -
The partnership is accelerated by the need for reliable energy amidst logistical challenges in securing fossil fuels from the Middle East. 
This enhanced cooperation strengthens energy security for both nations, utilizing Nepal's substantial hydroelectric potential to support India's growing grid requirements.
