Root Causes of the Mithi River Crisis
Unchecked Waste Dumping:-
 An estimated 800-1,000 tonnes of municipal waste, single-use plastics, and untreated sewage are dumped into the river daily by the dense slums, illegal garages, and scrap businesses lining its banks. 
Industrial Effluents: -
Approximately 93% of the pollution is domestic, but over 1,500 small-scale industries (like tanneries, dye units, and auto garages) discharge untreated chemicals directly into the water. 
Constricted Flow & Mangrove Destruction: -
Decades of aggressive urban land reclamation for the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and the Mumbai International Airport have drastically reduced the river's original width, altering its natural flow and destroying the wetlands that naturally trap toxins. 
Administrative and Contractual Delays:- The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) regularly miss their desilting and cleaning deadlines. The annual clean-up efforts frequently face bottlenecks due to delays, contractor hesitations, and investigations into tender irregularities. 
Ongoing Mitigation and Rejuvenation Efforts
New Infrastructure Push: -
To tackle core pollution, the BMC and MMRDA committed Twin Infrastructure Projects worth close to ₹2,000 crore. This includes a ₹1,700- ₹1,816 crore project awarded for deep tunnels, desilting, and improving sewage interception. 
Deep Tunnels:-
 A ₹455 crore project was initiated to construct deep sewage tunnels intended to carry untreated waste directly to upcoming treatment plants (like those at Dharavi), keeping it out of the river channel. 
Despite these massive expenditures, experts warn that the river will only truly revive if waste disposal at the source is stopped and sewage interceptors become fully operational.
