India's peak power demand has surged significantly—climbing roughly 12% in early 2026 and hitting an all-time high of 270.8 GW in May—with long-term projections estimating overall national electricity demand will double over the next decade due to rising temperatures, cooling needs, and rapid industrial growth.
Current Demand and Drivers
Record Highs: -
Peak power demand touched an all-time high of 270.8 GW driven by intense heatwaves and heavy residential cooling use.
Quarterly Spikes: -
Electricity peak demand rose by about 12% during the April–June 2026 period compared to the previous year.
Cooling Expansion: -
Air conditioning and cooling appliances heavily drive consumption, particularly during hot summer days and nights. 
Supply and Generation Response
Renewable Milestone: -
Variable renewable energy (VRE) generation hit a record 103.7 GW in July 2026, with solar contributing 75 GW and wind providing the rest. 
Thermal Backup: -
Coal and thermal generation continue to shoulder the primary load during peak deficit hours, balancing grid stability alongside hydro and nuclear assets. 
Capacity Growth: -
Total installed generation capacity reached 548.86 GW by mid-2026 as the government works to prevent shortages and modernize transmission corridors.
